Opa-Locka, Fla. Ė Over the weekend of Friday and Saturday, the 26th and 27th of April 2019, seniors and cadets from CAP units in Group 7 participated in the annual SAFEEís SFL Air Expo at the Opa-Locka Airport, for the eighth consecutive year.
With its goal to introduce youth, young adults and members of the community to the huge impact of the aviation industry on South Florida, SAFEE shares its focus on youth and aerospace education with CAP.
To this end, and in support of SAFEEís efforts, 35 CAP members from Group 7 Headquarters and the Tamiami Composite, Homestead Air Reserve Base Cadet, Miami Springs Optimist Cadet, Opa-Locka Cadet, and Miami Senor Squadrons manned the recruiting booth and aircraft static display, and provided logistical support for the event while also exploring various aviation-themed displays mounted by industry professionals, institutions, corporations, and associations.
In charge of CAPís involvement were Lt. Col. David Horowitz and Lt. Col. M. J. Horowitz of Miami Senior Squadron One on the first day, and 1st Lt. Nicholas Rodriguez of the Opa-Locka Cadet Squadron and Cadet Capt. Kassandra Buell of the Tamiami Composite Squadron on the second day. At the start of the second day, Lt. Col. Mario Baldatti, Group 7 Safety Officer, gave the safety briefing, and later Lt. Col. Bonnie Hinck-Baldatti and Lt. Col. M. J. Horowitz delivered a presentation on CAPís missions, history, and aerospace activities.
At the end of the event, SAFEE Director, Mr. Darrell Roberts, estimated that public attendance on each of the two days was at least 1,000, and expressed his organizationís appreciation for CAP's committed involvement in yet another successful exposition.
