Lakeland, Fla. --

Members from Florida Wing arrive several days early to the Sun n Fun International Fly-In to assist Sun n Fun personnel and EAA volunteers to prepare for the airshow and to set up the Civil Air Patrol operations at the event. One of the most significant tasks is to man the hangars where many of the exhibitors and vendors for the event are bringing in their displays and exhibits for the airshow. This year, the Lakeland Composite Squadron and their commander Maj. Pat Pittman took the lead in staffing for hangar duty. CAP members help vendors locate their spaces inside the buildings and check credentials at the door to keep the area secure.

1st Lt. James Chamberland, commander of the Polk Composite Squadron assisted with flight line marshalling and many cadets helped keep pedestrian traffic off taxiway Bravo as aircraft were moving into position for the event.

Other members concentrated on setting up the bivouac site, including several pop up canopies for dining facilities and break areas, as well as setting up the cook area. The recruiting booth and a Cessna 172 were put into position next to the Lakeland Aero Club which hosts the CAP bivouac area. Certain areas at Sun n Fun are “no prop” meaning engines off. The CAP Cessna had to be towed from taxiway bravo to its static display location. The Command Post trailer was brought in for the incident commanders to use during the event and it was set up by Air Ops on the flight line. The last piece put into place behind the Aero Club was the newly refurbished Communications Trailer.

Civil Air Patrol members start planning for this airshow nearly six months before the first day, including a team that attends Sun n Fun planning meetings for several months in preparation for the event. The planning team consisted of Capt. Trisha King and Capt. Jeremy King as Sun n Fun Air Ops liaisons; Maj. Joe Mora as Planning Coordinator; Capt. Ann Marie Kozloski, event Commander; Capt. Sybrian Castleman, Public Affairs; and C/Capt. Jordan Wiggins, Cadet Commander.
